It was a really busy week for me so I’ve been trying to catch up on my rss feeds this weekend.
One of the best articles I read this week was from Chris Thurman at Visual Swirl – Redesign Vs. Tweaked Design: What’s Best for Your Website. Great read not only for those needing a change with their current site, but for everyone involved in web design as the issue is certain to come up eventually. It has been a recurring theme with most clients I’ve worked with – they want a total site revamp to be more “current” and “up-to-date” with the competition. While sometimes the original sites are garbage to begin with, other times it only takes changing positions or updating content. The actual content of a web site just can’t get enough recognition for being the most important factor. Before I ramble on further, here is what I’ve gathered this week for everyone:
- 111 Best Online Web Design Tools – Quite a few useful tools like the form style generator and several favicon generators.
- Free icon sets with a commercial license – Some really nice icon sets including ecommerce icons..
- 20 Wordpress CMS plugins - Wordpress seems to be used as a CMS more and more lately and most of these plugins drastically improve the conversion from a traditional blog format.
- 12 useful CSS tools – My favorite out of these is CSS text wrapper for displaying text in unique shapes instead of just rectangles.
Tutorials -
- Timed CSS stylesheet change with PHP – The tutorial uses different stylesheets to show the time changing through the day, but this technique has other practical uses.
- Unique face mask in Photoshop – Cool effect using a photo of Angelina Jolie
- Create vector from a portrait – Easy to follow and super helpful for learning how to vectorize any kind of picture.
- How to create “The Wire” effect from Tumblr
- How to create a fun, red haired boy character – Using Photoshop, tuts+ always has some of the best tutorials.
